Despite herculean Luftwaffe efforts, galvanized by the highly-capable Erhard Milch, the supplies delivered were never enough and when the major airfields inside and outside the Stalingrad kessel at Gumrak, Pitomnik, Morosovskaya and Tatsinskaya were over-run, the writing was on the wall for the battered and ultimately starved 6th Army, which surrendered in February 1943. Manstein's attempt to break through to 6th Army fell short while Hitler forbade withdrawal, lulled by Goering's assurances that the Luftwaffe could repeat its success in supplying by air the earlier (but much smaller) Demyansk pocket. After slowly grinding down the epic Soviet defense of the city, the German forces there were cut off by two successive pincer attacks which overwhelmed the less well-equipped Romanian, Italian and Hungarian allies holding the flanks. The Wehrmacht's 6th Army, fresh from its triumph in the Second Battle of Kharkov, had swept south in the major German offensive of 1942, to the banks of the River Volga and the city which bore the name of the wily and feared Soviet leader. But with BoS, it's back to the (here, frozen) steppes of Mother Russia and the Great Patriotic War, as the Soviets dubbed the bitter conflict in the east.Īs you'd expect from the title, BoS is based around the momentous and decisive battles around Stalingrad in late 1942 and early 1943. The last major iteration, Cliffs of Dover, forsook the Eastern Front for the Battle of Britain. Well, it's here! IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad ('BoS') is the latest in a long line of WW2 air combat sims to bear the illustrious IL-2 name. You will lose sight of the enemy every time.* Red Army 'no retreat' slogan during the Battle of Stalingrad and your enemy is passing on your right, as your enemy moves from your right-aft view into the dead 6 view and you press the key for dead 6, the view will rotate left from right-aft through the forward position, all the way to 181 Deg. For example, if your dead 6 view is 181 Deg. This becomes a problem when tracking an enemy rearward from the side opposite the saved 6 O'clock view. In AH, it is exactly 180 Degrees and it will rotate to that position in the shortest path possible from your current view. The only drawback to the Il-2 view system is how handles the dead 6 O'clock position. The snap speed is adjustable in the options menu. Also, all views are zoomed in about 50% by default, so zoom out each view to get total coverage. In Il-2, the Insert, Home, End, Delete, Page Up, and Page Down keys move your head positions and you can move the mouse to adjust the center point of a given view. In AH, your view angles are locked into increments of 45 degrees regardless of where you move the head position using the mouse keys. Not sure how different using key commands for views, but with the hat switch Il-2 offers more flexibility in views than AH - with one noticeable drawback. Sometimes we are unlucky and see nothing, but I'd say 4/5 times we get into something.īozon, I use a hat switch in IL-2 just like AH. Generally, the KN guys will launch fighters and defend a target or patrol an area. The problem is side balancing sometimes dictates which side you fly on. The fighter guys escort/defend the targets and there is always something to do for everyone. Allies in there and naturally, many people gravitate toward the bombers and attack planes. The first side to destroy all the targets win that map. A typical map will have about 6 targets on each side, all varying from tanks to bridges to factories, which are to be destroyed by bombs. The other war servers, like Wings of Liberty, have a mixed bag. You get spawned at about 300m and immediately get caught up in the soup. You can move your head position in each angle and save the head position just like AH. My only gripe with the views is that my pilot looks 7 o'clock and when I want to look 6 from that position I turn my head all the way around. I can assure you that you will have a view system just like AH. My views are identical to keypad AH snap views.
